How BallerinaPainting.com began..
Hi! I'm Martha Sharp, the creator of BallerinaPainting.com.
BallerinaPainting.com began at an artist friend's figurative painting session in which the model was a ballet dancer. That was the first time I had met a ballet dancer and was so impressed by her beauty and strength. I loved painting her, so I continued my painting of ballet dancers by having a couple of the dancers from the local ballet company, Charleston Ballet Theatre, come to my studio. The dancers would come in the evening and pose while I painted them. During these painting sessions I learned about their passion for dance, about the years of study, dancers' injuries, the minimal salaries most dancers make, the challenges that ballet companies have for funding, etc.
From these experiences, I decided that I want to help the Charleston Ballet Theatre raise funds. I worked on several fundraising projects and then the thought crossed my mind one day that I would like to figure out a way to help all ballet companies.
Before I started painting, my former career was in the computer field. So after many days of thinking about this project, one morning I woke up with the answer! That's how this website, BallerinaPainting.com was born; combining by computer knowledge with my passion for painting ballerinas and desire to raise funds for ballet companies.
My hope is that besides raising funds for ballet companies, I would like the ballet artwork in people's homes to be a constant reminder of the beauty of ballet. And to share this love of ballet with others to preserve this artform.
A Huge Thank You!
All of these paintings would not have been possible without the generosity of the Charleston Ballet Theatre and Jill Bahr for allowing Karen Hagan and myself to photograph backstage during their performances to gather reference material for this collection of paintings. By allowing us these opportunities, we are able to share with you our feelings and views of these wonderful dancers!
